Press release – Stop racism

30 January 2023
Communique-SBB

The SNB wished to react today to the remarks made by one of the spectators during the Charleville Mézières-Metz game in NM2 which was held yesterday late afternoon at the Arena of Charleville-Mézières.

During the game, while a player was on the ground after having played a duel and a teammate came to help him to get up, a spectator insulted him by declaring: “Get up bonobo!

We strongly condemn this type of comments and speeches and bring, by this press release, our total support to this player.

The SNB fights daily to eradicate these speeches that tarnish the image of sport and are against the values we want to transmit.

Every year, we mobilize together, men and women basketball players, through a campaign to convey this strong message: “Diversity is our strength”!

We are convinced that this fight must be everyone’s business and that everyone has an important role to play; players, coaches, clubs, referees, institutions, media but also the public.

We therefore ask that an investigation be opened to shed light on the remarks made about the player and that appropriate sanctions be taken.

We recall that racist remarks constitute a crime and that the author is liable to up to 1 year of imprisonment and a 45,000 € fine.
